Why did another ambulance service respond to my 9-1-1 emergency?
The Hope Valley Ambulance provides a team of paid staff members, volunteers, and ambulances to meet the community’s needs. If all available ambulances and personnel are responding to other emergencies or medical transportation requests, the closest available ambulance from a neighboring community will respond mutual aid. The Squad currently offers reciprocity with some (but not all) of our neighboring services to ensure that you will not end up with a bill if you are a subscription member. You must call our office and let us know which ambulance service transported you to the hospital so we can ensure orderly processing of billing.
Why did I get a bill if I was not transported to the hospital?
If Hope Valley Ambulance provides you treatment and/or assessment, and you decide that you do not want to go to the hospital, we may still bill you for the expense of care and assessment provided.
I was transported by Hope Valley Ambulance. Why did I get a bill from another Ambulance service? (and vice versa)
There are multiple levels of care that ambulances provide based on staffing, BLS and ALS. BLS stands for basic life support (EMT's) and ALS stands for Advanced Life Support (AEMT-Cardiac's and Paramedics). ALS providers have more training and can provide more interventions. Based on your condition/medical emergency, these additional resources may be necessary to provide more invasive life saving measures, this is often accomplished via an "ALS intercept" with another ambulance service, meaning an additional ambulance staffed with a AEMT, AEMT-Cardiac, Or Paramedic meets the original ambulance on the scene or somewhere during transport. This will sometimes result in a bill from that other service.
Why was I transported to a hospital other than the hospital I requested?
Hope Valley Ambulance will always try to honor patient requests for a specific hospital however, there are certain medical conditions that require ambulance personnel to transport you to the closest, most appropriate facility that is able to treat your emergency. These decisions are required by state EMS protocols and department of health regulations and sometimes by our medical control physicians. Our personnel have received extensive training in assessing illnesses and injuries that require transport to a specific facility. These facilities will provide the best care for you or your family member. Although some of these hospitals may be farther away, they have the most qualified staff and equipment on hand to treat specific illnesses or injuries. Additionally, due to overcrowding, hospitals periodically will not take ambulance patients, turning them away in a practice called "diversion".
