Hope Valley Ambulance was first founded in 1951, as a part of the Hope Valley Wyoming Fire District. A small group of volunteers collaborated and assembled to help meet the needs of the area for emergency medical services. In the 1950s it was not uncommon for ambulances to have long response times. Initially, ambulances responded from other towns such as Westerly and/or local funeral homes. In the 1960s, Hope Valley Ambulance separated from the Hope Valley Wyoming Fire District to become its own agency. In that time, Hope Valley Ambulance was still housed out of the Hope Valley Fire Station (now the Hope Valley Post Office.) In the years following the separation, Hope Valley Ambulance was granted use of land on Fairview Avenue by the S.R. Avery funeral home. Hope Valley Ambulance members then constructed a building and began undergoing operations from said building in early 1963. Hope Valley Ambulance has been an independent "third service" for over 50 years. Hope Valley Ambulance initially serviced a very large region: throughout Southern Rhode Island and Eastern Connecticut, due to a lack of other services in the area. In the 1970s, other agencies such as North Stonington Ambulance, Ashaway Ambulance, and Charlestown Ambulance, began to form allowing quicker response times to their respective service districts. Hope Valley Ambulance currently services the entire town of Richmond, RI and around 50% of the town of Hopkinton, RI. Hope Valley Ambulance also responds "mutual aid" when requested to towns in, but not limited to: Washinton and Kent County, RI, New London, CT, and Windham County, CT. Hope Valley Ambulance currently provides (based on staffing) Paramedic level service, AEMT-Cardiac level service, and EMT level service. Hope Valley Ambulances meets or exceeds the requirements set by the Rhode Island Department of Health.
